2019: New Year, New YOU!!!
As the countdown began to 2019, I can’t tell you how many times I heard people say “I can’t wait for 2018 to be over!”. It seemed like just about everyone had a story about their own life, or the life of someone close to them, that resulted in 2018 being a tough year physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Even when we feel like we’re heading in the right direction, every year can bring its own challenges. The key is to take stock of everything that happened, and process the lessons learned in order to move forward into a better version of ourselves.
Because as the saying goes, “Without the rain there are no rainbows.”
So let’s take a look how we can take the storms that may have been 2018 and turn them into beautiful rainbows of 2019.
First: I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. Why? Simply because I find they’re usually not realistic and therefore not sustainable. This is why I continually make goals for myself; not just now, but also continuously the year.
The one thing I see as a common theme amongst most people, including yours truly, is we avoid what scares us. This year, I’m taking the leap and starting a 200 hour yoga teacher training program! Although nervous, I’m excited about the challenge that lies ahead. All these questions and doubts keep running through my mind…
Second: I feel that we all can get stuck in a rut. We get so used to the daily grind of work, life, family, and activities, that we forget variety is the spice of life. Instead of going home, eating terrible takeout and parking your butt on the sofa to chill with your Netflix, why not take up a new hobby?
Personally, after an entire season off, I’m starting back to playing Ultimate Frisbee next week. A whole season off! I’m nervous, but we all have to start somewhere. I’m also working towards playing soccer later this year, even though I know next to nothing about soccer.
But, this year is all about goals and having fun right?!
Third: it’s important to make, and take time for you.
Quiet down time is key to rejuvenating your body, mind and spirit.
This can be as simple as laying down, reading, or journaling for 15 minutes before you start your day, after you get home from work, or right before your head hits that pillow at night. Reconnecting with who you are, in a space made just for you, is important to keep balanced and aware in this fast paced world. Meditation is ideal for this and there are so many apps you can download that provide short, guided meditations to help you get started. Plus, the benefits are infinite!!!
Lastly: the one thing that I feel has been changing my life already is practicing more gratitude. Gratitude is the practice of being genuinely thankful and humbled by all that you have, no matter how small or how little it may seem.
So on that note, I will leave you with the reminder it sent to me today:
