Embrace the Fall Energy and Get Back on Track!
Fall is all about getting back on track. So how do we ensure that we stay the course from a Chinese Medicine perspective? If we were to follow the ancient master’s advice, we would attune our mind, body and spirit, to the qualities of late-summer/early fall. Attunement is learning how to self-nurture and harmonize, especially within nature.
The season of summer with its extreme Yang energy and intense brightness that softens into autumn, when the cooler Yin drifts in. The late-summer season is associated with the Earth element, which is one of five other elements: Metal, Water, Wood and Fire.
To stay the course, you will want to align and harmonize your energy to the current season. The three ways to align your Earth element: lifestyle, diet and spiritual health practices.
Lifestyle habits: The goal of the season is to reap the harvest and re-generate to allow our Qi energy to flow in health.
- This is the time to take care of yourself and prioritize the things you value and want to nourish, and then you can nurture others.
- Are you returning to work or study? Making life-plans? The Earth element ‘digests’ thought and cultivates your learning, thinking and analysis.
- Be careful not to absorb too much negative news.
- Look at your spiritual truth and strengthen your connection. Asking questions of personal inquiry acknowledges that you are an individual, divine spirit and the answers will lead to you to reconnect to your spiritual truth and potential.
Earth element diet: the Spleen, Stomach and Pancreas. You may have heard me mention how the Spleen is one of the most important organs, due to its role in distributing Qi energy. Imbalanced Spleen/Stomach energy affects the whole body. The Earth element have preference for sweet foods ie/ whole grains, peaches, pears, plums (within balance). The Earth element’s colour is Orange and eating sweet potato, pumpkin, and carrots during this season will help support the Spleen and Stomach to integrate our energy better.
Emotional and spiritual health:
The Earth emotion of ‘worry’ is caused by overthinking (Spleen energy). When lifestyle, diet or emotional issues are not in-check, it will often manifest as digestive health problems, sluggish energy, coupled with the emotions of being stuck, stubborn, or inflexible. Similarly, stuck Stomach energy (Earth element) will produce emotions of loneliness, emptiness, and abandonment.
Both types of imbalances can be treated and energetically harmonized in quick order through acupuncture and dietary changes. If the imbalance is primarily emotional, I suggest talk therapy, so the imbalance doesn’t reoccur.
Balanced Earth energy emotions are found in learning to trust and have acceptance. Acupuncture is a wonderful guide and can assist us as we journey through our personal and spiritual self-inquiry and awakening. Self-inquiry practiced daily, cultivates a trust and acceptance in our own mindset and enables us to…stay the course.
